Ayurvedic treatment for Arthritis
Arthritis is a painful disorder of the joints, in which the joints become inflamed and cause lots of pain. Arthritis arises due to the malfunctioning of the body’s immune system. The immune system starts creating antibodies even without the presence of any foreign bodies. As the number of antibodies increases, they start the healthy cells in the human body. Arthritis is considered and categorized as an “Auto-Immune Disease”.
In Ayurveda, Arthritis is called as “Sandhivat” and it is termed as a disease of bone and joints. As the name suggests vitiated Vata dosha and ama or undigested or improperly formed food essence in the body are the main culprits for the disease. The main cause of arthritis has altered the state of digestion and metabolism caused by unhealthy food habits when there is diminished digestive power. Ayurveda thus offers a cure for arthritis through therapies that aim to correct digestion and metabolism.
Arthritis is one of the consequences of this process, which is common in the elderly people. This is one of the major causes of chronic disability, affecting the quality of life. Therapies like abhyanga, virechan, Basti and upanaham have been showing significant positive results in improving the quality of life of the affected individual.

- Virechana: Virechana therapy includes induced purgation. It starts with the administration of medicated ghee in increased doses. The vitiated vatas are collected in the abdomen removed through anal route.
- Abhyanga: Abhyanga is a full body massage with medicated oil that lubricates the joints and reduces pain arising due to arthritis joint inflammation. The treatment helps in strengthening the muscles supporting joints.
- Vasti: Vasti treatment includes oil enemas or decoction enemas to remove unwanted toxins and Vata dosha from the body.
- Upanaham: Upanaham involves the application of medicinal paste over arthritis joints that have swelling and pain.
